Scientific advances often occur when good ideas are combined across disciplines to become great ideas. The more problem solvers – especially those who may look at a situation from a different perspective – we can bring together, the more unique our ideas will be. Diversity of thoughts and expertise help our scientists and other professionals solve problems and encourage innovation.
Employee Resource Groups Fuel Diversity
Our employee resource groups are an important part of our work and culture, as they help us understand and connect with our patients.
- Support Lilly values and business goals, including the company’s commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
- Provide networking opportunities among employees with common interests or cultures; and
- Create learning opportunities for Lilly employees at all levels.
We aspire to fully leverage the talents of our diverse work force to operate within an increasingly diverse marketplace. We continue to increase our leaders’ accountability to develop diverse talent.
In fact, our senior leaders must meet diversity workforce performance objectives. These objectives focus on mentoring and career path planning for women and diverse employees both in our global workforce and in the United States. We require diversity training for all U.S. employees, with additional training for supervisors.
Our succession-management process identifies leaders with a proven track record of success and capability in their areas of expertise. We work to develop women and diverse employees for consideration for future openings in key positions.
Managers from each division assess employees to determine which workers have the potential to take on more senior roles. These employees are provided development opportunities, including leadership training and executive mentors. For example, more than 150 senior women leaders have participated in our Women in Leadership Retreat program since its launch in 2005. Lilly also conducts leadership retreats globally for employees who represent diverse talents and backgrounds.
In addition, we sponsor a wide array of cultural and educational programs designed to develop and support women, people of diverse backgrounds, and people with disabilities both internally and externally through our employee resource groups.
