Vice President of Biotechnology Discovery Research
Thomas F. Bumol, Ph.D., was named vice president of biotechnology discovery research in January 2002 and serves as president of Applied Molecular Evolution, a subsidiary of Eli Lilly and Company. He had been vice president of research technologies and proteins for Lilly Research Laboratories since 2001. He is a member of the company’s senior management council.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in microbiology from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in 1975. He received his doctorate in microbiology in 1980 from the University of Minnesota and completed his postdoctoral training in molecular immunology at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in LaJolla, California.
Bumol joined Lilly in 1982 as a senior immunologist for Lilly Research Laboratories. He became a research scientist in 1986 and was named head of connective tissue and monoclonal antibody research the following year. In 1990, he became head of cardiovascular research. From 1991 through 1995, he was promoted to director and executive director of cardiovascular research. He was named executive director of technology core research in 1996, and executive director, research technologies and proteins in 1997.
