Frank M. Deane, Ph.D., was named president of manufacturing for Lilly in May 2007 and is a member of Lilly’s operations committee and the senior
management council. He had been vice president of quality since December 2001.
Deane received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from University
College, Dublin, Ireland, in 1971. He then attended the University of
Maryland, receiving master’s and doctorate degrees, both also
in chemical engineering, in 1972 and 1974, respectively.
Deane joined Lilly in 1979 and was named manager, technical services/quality
control, for the company's bulk manufacturing operations in Kin sale,
Ireland, where he had a number of operational responsibilities until
being transferred to the U.S. in 1986 as manager of quality control
and technical services at the company’s Clinton Laboratories near
Clinton, Ind. From there, he moved to Puerto Rico in 1988 where he had
general management responsibilities for production, quality, and technical
services in Lilly’s Puerto Rican operations. He returned to the
U.S. in 1993 as the general manager of U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturing
and assumed responsibilities for the company’s worldwide bulk
manufacturing operations in 1997.
