Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly and Company jointly developed and launched Byetta®, approved by the FDA in April 2005 as adjunctive therapy to improve blood-sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes who have not achieved adequate control on metformin and/or a sulfonylurea, two common oral diabetes medications. Amylin and Lilly are working together to develop a once-weekly, long-acting formulation of exenatide, a subcutaneous injection of exenatide for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Once-weekly exenatide has not been approved by the FDA for marketing in the United States or by regulatory agencies elsewhere in the world.
