Lilly ranks in the top half of the world's 20 largest pharmaceutical companies for its efforts to increase universal access to medicine. The Access to Medicine Foundation in the Netherlands rates companies on its Access to Medicines Index. Lilly ranked 10th and earned a perfect score for philanthropy and a near-perfect score for public policy influence and advocacy.

Lilly received two awards for its commitment to hiring people with disabilities. The Indianapolis Mayor's Advisory Council on Disability honored the company in July with the 2008 Employer Access and Inclusion Award. The recognition was for Lilly's leadership with The Employment Network, a group of 70 organizations working to increase employment and self-sufficiency for Indianapolis residents with disabilities. Lilly's Greenfield site also was cited. Then, in September, Noble of Indiana honored Lilly with its 2008 President's Award, the organization's highest honor. It is presented only to those who demonstrate a long-term commitment to supporting Indiana residents with developmental disabilities.

Forbes.com named Lilly the fifth most generous U.S. company based on percent of income. Lilly was listed as having donated 1.3 percent of its 2006 operating income of $5.4 billion, which equals $70 million. Kroger Stores ranked first, and Bristol-Myers Squibb was the only other pharma company in the top five.

Missouri's behavioral health pharmacy management program—initially funded by Lilly—won a 2008 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Science and Service Award in the category of treatment of mental illness and recovery support service. The initiative aims to improve patient care by evaluating Medicaid pharmacy claims for all mental-health medications against best-practice standards of care. Physicians are informed when standards are not met.

Lilly communicators were honored by their peers in October by the Heritage region of the International Association of Business Communicators. Lilly was given a Silver Quill Award of Excellence in employee communication for planning and implementing the company's all-employee Vision Jam. Judges reviewed entries from 20 chapters in 17 states and awarded 11 Silver Quill Awards of Excellence.

Lilly and the International Council of Nurses received the 2008 Partnership Award from the Business Civic Leadership Center of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in November for their efforts to fight multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). The Lilly-International Council of Nurses partnership builds nursing capacity to improve the care, treatment, and prevention of tuberculosis and MDR-TB. The project's training and education program reaches thousands of nurses in high-burden countries and is supplemented by global learning resources, e-tools, and an annual awards program.

Med Ad News readers rated Lilly the third-most-admired global company in the pharmaceutical industry. This is Lilly's highest ranking since the publication began the list in 2001, and a jump from ninth-place last year.

For the third year in a row, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation gave Lilly a perfect 100 percent ranking in its Corporate Equality Index for the protection of and support for benefits for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender employees. Lilly was one of three Indiana-based companies to earn the national recognition.

Many employees participated in painting a mural along a 1,230-foot wall on an Indianapolis street just south of corporate headquarters during Lilly's Global Day of Service in May. The activity has since been determined to be the world's largest paint-by-number mural by the Guinness World Records. The mural was among 60 beautification projects completed in partnership with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. and more than 50 other community organizations. Employee community service efforts during the Global Day of Service also led to two other awards: first place in the Business/Professional Organization—Beautification Category from Keep America Beautiful, and a Business of the Year award from the Indiana Urban Forestry Council.

The U.S. Small Business Administration rated Lilly outstanding for its supplier diversity initiatives. Lilly was in the top tier of all companies partnering with small and diverse businesses for the third consecutive year.

Information Week magazine honored Lilly in September for ranking among the top companies that leverage technology in ways to improve their businesses. Lilly was 92nd out of 500 companies surveyed. Lilly also was among six firms recognized as innovation leaders in a special feature that noted the company's productivity achievements through its Orion project. The Orion project is a portfolio management system that helps Lilly understand the potential and risks of its pipeline medicines.

For the third straight year, Lilly received the "Top Companies for Blacks in Technology" award from The National Black Data Processing Associates and WorkplaceDiversity.com, a leading diversity job board.

Lilly India was ranked among the top 10 "Best Companies to Work for in India" survey for 2008, based on a Business Today-Mercer-TNS study. Ranked 9th overall, Lilly was the only pharmaceutical company on the list. Lilly began operations in India in 1993.

The affiliate was ranked as the second-best company in Sweden in the country's annual Great Place to Work survey. Company officials also played a key role in a seminar sponsored in part by the American Chamber of Commerce in Sweden to share employee satisfaction success stories of Swedish-American companies.

MBA students included Lilly in their top picks of best places to work in the Fortune.com Top 100 list. The list is compiled following results of a national survey that asks male and female MBA students to rank the companies where they would most like to work. Lilly was the only Indiana company included in the top 100. Lilly made two lists: the top companies for MBAs (86) and the top companies for women MBAs (74).

Lilly is a top biopharmaceutical employer once again, according to the journal Science. The company ranked 10th on the annual list of top 20 employers, up one position from last year. The list rates employers on 23 characteristics and is based on the journal's 2008 survey of nearly 4,000 employees from 500 employers in the biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, pharmaceutical, and related industries. Results were published in the October 10 issue.

Lilly once again secured a spot on Working Mother magazine's 100 Best Companies list. It's the 14th time for Lilly to make the list, included in the October issue. Working Mother cited Lilly for the company's flexibility, child care on business trips, summer camp, and Mommy Mentoring program.

The Interactive Media Council, Inc. honored the InsideCymbalta.com website with its Outstanding Achievement Award in the annual Interactive Media Awards competition. The Lilly entry received 461 of 500 possible points. Judges said the site "represents a very high standard of planning, execution and overall professionalism."

The affiliate was named as one of the 10 Ruban d'Honneur recipients for two categories in the European Business Awards: Award for Corporate Sustainability and the Employer of The Year award.

In November, Lilly Japan was honored by Hyogo Prefectural Social Welfare Council for its collaboration with Hyogo Selp Center, a nonprofit organization that supports and coordinates workplace activities for people with disabilities. Lilly Japan has employed several people with disabilities in its facility support department. In June, the affiliate organized trade fairs with the NPO to help promote hand-made products by the patients.

Lilly's Integrity in Business initiative was recognized in October as the best initiative in government and anticorruption procedures at the CSR Market Place, an annual event in Spain that focuses on best practices in corporate social responsibility. The Lilly program explains how to use new questionnaires and tools to analyze and document Lilly's relationships with business partners.

The site in Lafayette, Indiana, received the Diversity Round Table Award from the Lafayette-West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce for working to achieve cultural diversity as demonstrated by the leaders' attitudes, policies and practices.

For the second year in a row, BDPA honored Lilly as one of 10 companies on its list. Two Lilly IT employees, Tim Brown, IT team leader, and Darrell Styles, associate information consultant, also received the organization's Epsilon Awards for their individual contributions.

For this third annual survey, the focus was on supplier diversity and senior management representation. Lilly is also among the 15 Best in Supplier Diversity.

Lilly ranked 32nd of 95 in this annual ranking. To be considered, employers must be identified by the career-services directors of about 100 large public and private undergraduate schools as among the best organizations in the U.S. for entry-level employees.

Lilly was named the 6th most generous company in the U.S. for 2006. The company was highly rated for its overall giving and transparency.

Lilly was recognized for its drug development deal with Nicholas Piramal. The award was determined by representatives from industry and Ernst & Young.

Lilly ranked 79th in this annual survey.

Lilly maintained a ranking of 4th among pharmaceutical companies. This is the eighth consecutive year that the company has received this recognition.

Lilly ranked 4th among the top 14 global pharmaceutical companies, up from 6th in 2006. This annual survey of 10,000 directors, executives, and analysts, in different industries, rates companies on the basis of nine attributes, including quality of management, innovation, and financial soundness.

Lilly ranked 13th globally and 9th in North America by a panel of judges composed of authors, academics, and journalists. Lilly was the highest-ranked pharmaceutical company.

The Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, an expanding alliance of 215 international companies, is dedicated to combating the epidemics through the business sector's skills and expertise.

For the Lilly Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) Partnership, the institute's report commended Lilly's team of dedicated employees and the pioneering nature of the public-private initiative. Lilly in June also announced the launch of a nonprofit public-private partnership that will research new tuberculosis treatments.

Lilly earned a top rating of 100 percent for the second year in a row and was noted for having a written non-discrimination policy covering sexual orientation and transgender employees in its employee handbook or manual, diversity training, and benefits for domestic partners. Lilly was again one of only two Indiana companies to be recognized.

Lilly was ranked 50th and first among biotech and pharmaceutical companies in this annual survey. Evaluation criteria included desktop computing, application development tools, e-business, networking, data access, and knowledge management.

Lilly was a repeat winner in the pharmaceutical category. Sidney Taurel was also recognized as the top-performing CEO in the large pharmaceutical sector.

Lilly and two other organizations received this annual award for their privacy leadership. Lilly was described as "a standout in its category" because of the elements of its global privacy program. Winners were chosen by a panel of public-sector and private-sector judges.

This award from the National Association of Counties (NACo), the only national organization that represents county governments in the United States, recognizes corporations that have demonstrated a deep corporate commitment to empower counties, county employees, and communities while advancing their own strategic business interests.NACo cited the outstanding efforts and contributions that Lilly continues to make with counties nationwide. Lilly is only the third corporation to be recognized in the 72-year history of this organization composed of local elected officials.

Lilly was recognized for its efforts to reach diverse communities with relevant health care information through the "Remarkable: That’s You" campaign. The corporate leadership award is the highest honor given to a corporation by one of the nation's leading civil rights and direct services organization.

Lilly was listed for the sixth consecutive year and was ranked 11th. The company’s top three characteristics were doing important, quality research; treating employees with respect; and loyal employees.

Lilly was named one of the top 15 large companies. Representatives from 248 companies worldwide assessed the working environment according to 45 criteria, including quality of research environment and opportunities for training and development.

For the second year, the SBA recognized Lilly's supplier diversity initiatives with a rating of outstanding. This puts Lilly in the top tier of all companies partnering with small and diverse businesses.

Lilly was listed for the 13th time. The company was recognized for reasons including its flexible scheduling, child-care availability and parental leave policies.

Veterinary industry leader Banfield, The Pet Hospital, gave Lilly its 2007 Best Clinical Advancement Award for combining essential elements that help dogs overcome separation anxiety.

Received a Program Design Certification from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its Tools That EmpowerTM Depression Care Management Program. The program helps identify patients with major depressive disorder and offers educational resources to support treatment of the disease.

Lilly Germany was recognized for its innovative products: Byetta® was voted the most innovative product by diabetologists, and Yentreve® was chosen as the most innovative product by neurologists/urologists (3rd consecutive year).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in May honored Tippecanoe Laboratories [in Lafayette, Indiana] with the Clean Air Excellence Award for outstanding innovation in clean-air technology via its Xact™ multi-metal continuous emission monitoring system, which enables the facility to remain within EPA standards for emissions. Xact monitors emissions from a hazardous-waste incinerator and will be utilized at other Lilly manufacturing sites in the future.

Four Lilly employees were included on the list: Timothy Coleman, director of IT for global medical; Tony Ezell, executive director of market research for Lilly USA; Marisa Pratt, director of finance for Lilly Research Laboratories; and Troy Turner, director of global brands for cardio/critical care.

Lilly USA President Deirdre Connelly was listed for the second straight year. The article recognized Connelly with this praise: "Connelly is on everyone's short list to be Big Pharma's first woman CEO. With 2006 revenues of $8.6 billion (up 10 percent), Lilly USA accounts for more than half of its parent's sales. Among the biggest growth drivers are Zyprexa®, an antipsychotic that could reach $5 billion in sales this year, and Cymbalta®, an antidepressant." Connelly was joined on the list by leaders at Johnson & Johnson, Genentech, and Schering-Plough.

Erika Carpenter, quality assurance representative at Tippecanoe Laboratories, was one of 12 individuals to receive the award, presented by the state's lieutenant governor on behalf of the Indiana Humanities Council to recognize people ages 19 to 29 who sustain excellence as entrepreneurial leaders, volunteers, scholars, and artists. Carpenter is considered a role model for women in science; her many activities include serving as Lilly chair of the 2007 American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Senior sales representative Scott Zerby, PharmD., received the center's first-ever award, which recognizes his efforts to add value and make patients a priority. Zerby has called on the account for eight years, building relationships with the center's psychiatrist, case managers, and therapists.

Executive Director of Corporate Tax David Lewis was lauded for his communication skills and leadership on tax-policy issues. The magazine polled nearly 7,000 senior finance and tax executives to determine honorees.

The industry publication cited Global Brand Marketing Director John Bamforth, Ph.D., on its list, which recognizes individuals who inspire colleagues and actively support learning within their organizations. Of particular note were Bamforth's mentoring and community-service efforts.

Three Lilly employees were included on the list: Tracy Boehm, Six Sigma black belt; Linda Gunn, Six Sigma black belt; and Shayla Davis, demand IT team leader. Women of Color Awards celebrate achievements of minority women and recognize those who have excelled as accomplished leaders in the technology industry and their respective communities.
