What We Support

Eli Lilly and Company and its foundation direct the company's philanthropic efforts through product donations, matching gifts and discretionary gifts. Due to the high level of competition for Lilly's philanthropic resources, some types of organizations are not supported as a matter of general policy.

Product Donations

The health care needs of people throughout the world are diverse, from those of societies seeking to increase the effectiveness of health care through sophisticated, innovative technology to the needs of communities concerned with securing a basic health care to help keep people alive.

Product donations are given through the following programs:

  • Lilly Cares Patient Assistance Program
  • Disaster Assistance and International Relief
  • Lilly Global Cares Medical Mission Program

Matching Gifts Program

The company's Matching Gifts Program matches employee and retiree gifts to cultural, educational, and selected health care organizations on a one-to-one basis. It accounts for just under 50 percent of all cash contributions made. Through the program, the Lilly foundation assists many non-profit institutions by combining the generosity of employee giving with corporate resources. While many non-profit organizations are directly supported by the company and foundation, the Matching Gifts Program allows employees to help determine how to spend a portion of the company's philanthropic resources.

Discretionary Gifts

The remaining cash contributions are made on a discretionary basis by the board of directors of the foundation through a competitive process that is outlined below. Cash contributions from the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation are strategically focused within two broad categories. Sixty percent of funds allocated for discretionary giving is directed to not-for-profit groups aligned with company interests. The remaining 40 percent is allocated for discretionary gifts in Indianapolis and several other communities where Lilly has a significant employee base.

The foundation's company-aligned giving focuses on:

  • public policy research
  • health and human services aligned with major therapeutic interests
  • academic relations.

The foundation's community-aligned giving focuses on:

  • culture
  • education and youth development
  • community development
  • locally-aligned health care organizations
  • fencerow neighborhood groups
  • diversity.

The foundation supports organizations within these categories that have a well-defined sense of purpose, a demonstrated commitment to maximizing available resources, and a reputation for meeting objectives and delivering quality programs and services.

National and International

Public Policy Research

The foundation supports various organizations designed to foster new ideas and public policy on a variety of issues that benefit society. Support is directed for the development of policies and programs on topics such as regulatory reform, development of free markets, and other matters dealing with the open and fair interaction of business and government.

Health and Human Services Aligned with Major Therapeutic Interests

The foundation is interested in providing support to groups that complement the work done in those therapeutic areas of most interest to the company. These areas include mental illness (particularly depression and schizophrenia), endocrinology (particularly diabetes and osteoporosis), oncology, cardiovascular care, infectious diseases and postmenopausal women's health. This general area annually receives the largest allocation of Lilly's philanthropic resources. Nevertheless, competition within the category is significant and the more-focused requests within these therapeutic areas are those generally selected for a gift.

Academic Relations

Generally, the Matching Gifts Program is thought to be more than adequate as a way of providing support for those educational institutions of most interest to the company's employees and retirees. Nevertheless, there are a few select programs and institutions with which Lilly maintains a special recruiting or research relationship. The Lilly foundation annually provides support for special projects and programs within these organizations and institutions that are separate from the research and/or recruiting relationship that might exist.

Indianapolis and Communities with a Significant Lilly Presence

Culture

Lilly and its foundation support development of the cultural amenities that enhance the communities to which employees are recruited. Thriving, culturally vibrant communities are an asset in attracting the kind of employees required for the company to be competitive on an international basis.

Education and Youth Development

Lilly and its foundation are interested in addressing the issues of K-through-12 education reform and youth development as the most significant issues of concern to its home-based communities. Projects that target parental involvement, establishing and raising educational standards, and the development of improved teaching techniques and better prepared teachers are of particular interest.

Community Development

The company and its foundation will support those projects that distinguish Indianapolis on a national and international basis that are not likely to materialize without the company's leadership and sponsorship. Examples of foundation support in this area include the Pan American Games, the NCAA Final Four Basketball Championships, the development of the International School, and relocating the National Collegiate Athletic Association to Indianapolis.

The company and its foundation are interested in supporting organizations and activities that celebrate the contributions of diverse populations and that encourage interaction among culturally diverse groups.

Fencerow Neighborhood Groups

The company and its foundation provide support for efforts within the neighborhoods immediately surrounding its major facilities that improve those neighborhoods and that help create a positive relationship between the company and its neighbors.

Locally-Aligned Health Care and Human Services

Most of Eli Lilly and Company's support for human service organizations is given through its matching gift support to the United Way. However, the foundation will provide special support to Indianapolis-based organizations that align with the therapeutic categories outlined above that are of special interest to the company.
