Patient Initiatives

Lilly recognizes that patients with serious diseases such as depression, schizophrenia, cancer and diabetes must overcome many obstacles related to their illnesses. Lilly has established a number of awards that recognize the achievements of these individuals and the health care professionals who assist patients in attaining their goals. We have also provided funding for programs that assist patients in getting the appropriate treatment and living with their diseases.

Lilly Moving Lives Forward Reintegration Scholarship Program

The goal of this program is to help persons with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and/or related schizophrenia-spectrum disorders to acquire the educational and vocational skills they need to reintegrate into society, secure jobs and regain their lives. Founded in 1997, over the years the scholarship has funded hundreds of students pursuing careers in engineering, law, psychiatry, graphic design, social work, architecture, education, computer sciences and more. Applications are posted each October at www.reintegration.com.

Lilly Reintegration Awards

This recognition program is a nationwide initiative that distinguishes not only outstanding achievements made by a mental health treatment team, but also honors individuals who are succeeding in their personal battles with psychiatric illness. Individuals may be nominated for Artistic Contribution, Mentorship and Inspiration awards. Nomination categories for the entire treatment team continue to recognize the critical role that caregivers, social workers, advocates, policy makers as well as nurses and clinicians play in helping move their patients’ lives forward. The seven awards honoring treatment team success include Lifetime Achievement, which recognizes a healthcare professional who has made remarkable contributions to many lives over the course of his or her career. The public is invited to nominate individuals, caregivers, treatment groups, treatment programs and advocates. To receive an application call 800-809-8202, e-mail a request to lillyawards@reintegration.com or write Lilly Reintegration Awards, PMB 1167, 734 N. LaSalle Street, Chicago, IL 60610. LillyforLife 50-Year Insulin Award

Managing diabetes means learning how to administer daily insulin doses, eating healthy foods, checking glucose levels, and exercising regularly. Managing these elements for more than 50 years, in addition to the other schedules of daily life, is an impressive accomplishment. The LillyforLife 50-Year Insulin Award recognizes people with diabetes who have been on insulin for at least 50 years. These people have learned how to manage their disease and adapt to the ever-changing technology of diabetes care -- they are an inspiration for other people with diabetes.

The LillyforLife 50-Year Insulin Award is presented to participants throughout the year. Once an application is processed, the award is sent directly to the award recipient.

LillyforLife Achievement Award

Established by Eli Lilly and Company in 2002, the LillyforLife Achievement Award is a recognition program that celebrates the inspiring achievements of people of all ages who live with diabetes. Those recognized do not have to be well known or famous for their achievements, but can be everyday people who have accomplished or are working toward exceptional personal success. This year, Lilly is expanding the award program to include not only people with diabetes, but anyone involved with the diabetes community.

Categories of submission include:

  • Patient aged 18 or over
  • Patient aged 17 or under
  • Professional (physician, nurse, educator, advocate, etc.)
  • Caretaker/Spouse/Partner
  • Journalist

One person from each category will be selected by a panel of judges to receive this special award. Applicants are eligible to apply for only one category. Peer or self-nominations are accepted through August 30, 2004. Each winner will choose a diabetes organization to receive a $1,000 contribution from Lilly in the winner’s name. Some award recipients will be asked to travel to Indianapolis, Indiana in November 2004 for a reception.

In October of 2003, Eli Lilly and Company, along with Lilly diabetes spokesperson and Olympic skier Kris Freeman, named Rick Largent of Moscow, Idaho, the first ever LillyforLife Achievement Award winner. Largent was chosen for his outstanding work traveling cross-country to educate patients and policymakers about the dual dilemma of living with diabetes and disabilities.

Welcome Back Awards

Sponsored by Lilly, the Welcome Back Awards is a national program launched in 1998 to fight the stigma associated with depression and help the public understand that depression is treatable. The awards, announced annually, recognize excellence and courage in the mental health community. They acknowledge outstanding accomplishments in the following areas: community service, destigmatization, primary care, psychiatry and lifetime achievement. An independent committee of mental health community leaders selects the winners from hundreds of nominations.

As part of the awards, Lilly makes a $5,000 donation to the not-for-profit institution of each honoree's choice. A $7,500 donation is made to the not-for-profit organization of the Lifetime Achievement honoree's choice.

Lilly is participating in a public-private partnership that joins the National Institutes of Health (NIH), other research organizations and four other pharmaceutical manufacturers. University of Michigan Depression Center

In July 2002, the Lilly Foundation provided a $750,000 unrestricted, three-year gift to the University of Michigan Depression Center. This gift will accelerate new programs to help people with depression get the treatment they need and sow the seeds for a potential future network of depression centers across the United States.

The U-M Depression Center, part of the U-M Health System, was founded in 2001 as the nation's first comprehensive depression center combining research, treatment and education. The center will expand outreach activities aimed at helping primary care physicians select and carry out treatment strategies for people with depression, giving patients an automated phone-based system for reporting their day-to-day response to treatment, thereby saving time, travel and effort; and coordinating care for patients through trained specialists called Care Navigators. Researchers also plan to develop and share strategies for improving the rate at which depression patients adhere to their treatment regimens.
