Partnering for Success

Successful alliances are critical to our strategy, and they are a fundamental way we deliver innovation and value to our customers and shareholders. We are working hard to be recognized as the pharmaceutical industry's premier partner by consistently creating value for our partners and Lilly. As part of our commitment to achieving value through partnerships, Lilly has created a dedicated organization for the management of alliances.

Lilly currently is involved in more than 100 research and development collaborations for technology, products and services with leading companies and universities and about 160 manufacturing alliances. The goals of these alliances span the spectrum — from access to novel molecules to innovative product delivery approaches to new technologies for health care research to manufacturing and marketing.

In 2001, for example, we established a major partnership with Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., that includes not only the in-licensing of Isis's novel antisense cancer-fighting Phase III compound, ISIS 3521, but also the discovery of antisense drugs for metabolic and inflammatory diseases. Another key component of this alliance involves using the Isis GeneTrove™ antisense technology as a tool to rapidly determine the functional role of up to 1,000 genes in disease.

Among our other collaborations:

  • agreement with Quintiles Transnational Corp. to jointly commercialize Cymbalta in the United States
  • alliance with Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH to jointly commercialize duloxetine for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence on a worldwide basis (excluding Japan) and Cymbalta for the treatment of depression outside the United States (excluding Japan)
  • alliance with Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc., to collaborate on the development and commercialization of exenatide for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Lilly is committed to establishing relationships with third parties to supplement and enhance its internal capabilities. We are aggressively seeking strategic alliances that facilitate development and commercialization of novel products to the mutual benefit of Lilly and our partners. Pharmaceutical discovery and biotechnology organizations with successful research leading to potential products or research technologies are encouraged to contact Research Acquisition at Eli Lilly and Company.
