Lilly Research LaboratoriesOur research division, Lilly Research Laboratories (LRL), is responsible for the discovery, development and clinical evaluation of our pharmaceutical products and for providing ongoing scientific support for marketed products. Discovering and developing innovative therapies for many of the world's unmet medical needs is at the core of LRL's mission. Lilly Research Laboratories comprises of approximately 7,900 people from a wide variety of scientific disciplines who work in laboratories in the U.S. and at other locations around the world. Research and development locations in the United States include four sites in Indiana (Indianapolis, Greenfield, West Lafayette and Clinton) as well as in California. Outside the United States, we operate research facilities in Belgium, Canada, England, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Spain and a joint-venture facility in Australia. In addition, we conduct clinical research in more than 50 countries around the world. Research and Development at LillyEli Lilly, a grandson of our company's founder and himself a longtime Lilly president, referred to research as "the heart of the business, the soul of the enterprise." Those words are as relevant as ever for our company in the 21st century. Today, we are among the industry's leaders in our commitment to research and development. We're investing substantial sums for talent and capabilities in R&D to make the most of an ongoing scientific revolution that promises incredible advances in health care. We have a unique and powerful combination of small-molecule drug discovery, biotech and bioproduct, and biological and therapeutic-area medical expertise. In 2001, for example, we announced plans for a new, $100 million research facility to be built at our corporate headquarters in Indianapolis with completion by 2003. We also continue to add talented people to our research and development staff. By the end of 2002, we anticipate the number of R&D employees at Lilly will be 8,200. As we hire new scientists - some of the finest minds in the world - we will strengthen and deepen our expertise at all stages of research and development. We also have made investments in technologies such as genomics, combinatorial chemistry, high-throughput screening and gene regulation. These tools of biotechnology are enriching our understanding of hundreds of potential drug targets and helping us accelerate the development of promising new therapies. In 2001, we spent more than $2.2 billion in the quest to discover and develop innovative medicines. That's almost double our R&D budget of only four years ago. The process of discovering, testing and developing a new drug is complex, costly, and time-consuming - costing $800 million or more and spanning 10 to 15 years. In recent years, we have taken steps to accelerate the development of our medicines so that they can reach patients faster.
