The health care needs of people throughout the world are diverse from those of societies seeking to increase the effectiveness of health care through sophisticated, innovative technology to the needs of communities concerned with securing basic health care to help keep people alive.

On Aug. 1, 2009, in the midst of the down economy, we adjusted the income eligibility for our most widely used patient assistance programs to allow enrollment of eligible patients with incomes at or less than 300 percent of the U.S. Federal Poverty Level. Previously, the income eligibility was at 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. We adjusted the income eligibility in response to growing numbers of patients who are struggling financially.

In 2008, we donated nearly $300 million in products to patients and agencies throughout the world. We offer various kinds of assistance to help patients secure the medicines they need. We also partner with industry groups to deliver assistance. In the United States, some of the Lilly and industry programs include:

Lilly Cares™

Lilly Cares™

Lilly Cares is a patient assistance program provided by Lilly Cares Foundation, Inc., a private operating foundation. Lilly Cares Foundation was created by and receives its financial and product support from Eli Lilly and Company. Lilly Cares Foundation and its patient assistance program is an outgrowth of Eli Lilly and Company´s ongoing efforts to provide eligible patients, who are US residents, with access to the Company´s medications.

Lilly Cares assists uninsured patients with incomes less than 300 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. In 2008, the Lilly Cares program assisted more than 142,000 patients, and distributed Lilly medications, valued at over $185 million, to eligible patients free of charge. Most Lilly products are available through the program.  Applications are available to anyone and must be completed and signed by both the patient and the physician.  Applications can be downloaded from the Lilly Cares website or faxed by calling Lilly Cares at 1-800-545-6962. The medication is shipped directly to the physician’s office.

Some of the key eligibility criteria for the program include:

  • Patients must be U.S. residents
  • Total yearly income at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level. For example: $44,000 or less for a family of two.
  • No other prescription drug coverage. For example: private insurance, government: Medicaid, VA, Medicare Part D.

Enrollment in the Lilly Cares program is for 12 months. Patients must apply for enrollment annually.
