Much of this work is done in partnership with leading organizations. Together, we can improve the healthcare system.

Health Education Resources

Lilly for Better Health™: Through the dynamic website – – Lilly for Better Health goes beyond medicine to support your personal health care journey with health and wellness resources to encourage a healthier, more active life.

Conversation Map®: Managing Diabetes During Ramadan: During the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, people with diabetes – whether they are fasting or not – are faced with a major change in the frequency and amount of food they eat and in the daily activities they can participate in, which may lead to complications.

Lilly has partnered with Healthy Interactions and the International Diabetes Federation to develop a new outreach program to help improve diabetes management skills. The map – available only in select markets abroad – covers several topics about diabetes management during Ramadan, including understanding the risks of fasting, what happens to the body while fasting, managing a day during Ramadan and creating a diabetes and Ramadan management plan. Programs for Youth

Minority Engineering Program of Indianapolis (MEPI): Lilly has supported MEPI, which encourages and prepares underrepresented minority students in grades through 12 to enter STEM-related careers, for more than 25 years. Nearly 20 Lilly engineering and IT professionals work with students at monthly hands-on learning sessions. Several Lilly leaders also serve on the MEPI Board of Directors and Advisory Board.

Street Law: Lilly collaborates with Faegre Baker Daniels LLP, on this national program at Indianapolis’ Shortridge Magnet High School for Law & Public Policy to help high school students learn real-world applications of civil law. With classroom teachers, representatives from Lilly’s law division and attorneys from Faegre Baker Daniels co-teach civil law classes as an elective to 11th grade students. The program tackles the lack of diversity in the legal profession by focusing on strategies that encourage minority students to enter the legal profession and provides students with role models, connections with legal professionals, and the opportunity to experience the types of work legal professionals do. STEM: Lilly is a leading company engaged in STEM strategy, including focus on teacher professional development. In 2013, Lilly, in collaboration with LRL and the Organization of Latinos at Lilly (OLA), hosted a group of approximately 30 high school students participating in the Young Innovators Quest (YIQ) camp organized by the non-profit, Health & Science Innovations. The Lilly Foundation provided a grant to YIQ and OLA/LRL to plan a one-day visit to Lilly for these students to experience aspects of drug development, including Lilly’s structure 3D program and demonstrations on auto-synthesis. In addition to these lab experiences, we facilitated a 40-minute panel discussion regarding STEM careers.

Center for Leadership Development (CLD): For more than 30 years, Lilly has partnered with CLD, which helps develop leadership and professional skills in African American youth in Indianapolis. Since 2005, and in conjunction with the CLD, Lilly sponsors the Corporate Youth Summit to expose minority youth to the career opportunities available in corporate America

Project Stepping Stone: Representatives from the Organization of Latinos at Lilly (OLA) participate in Project Stepping Stone, a community event for Indiana Latino high school students interested in attending college. The program helps ease the transition to college and helps students explore career opportunities.

Black Data Processing Associates Lilly partners with the Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA), an organization that exposes minority youth in Indianapolis to information technology concepts through interactive, hands-on workshops, seminars and activities in web application development and leading-edge technology topics.

Indiana Youth Group: The People Respecting Individual Differences Equally (PRIDE) employee resource group and the Lilly Foundation support Indiana Youth Group, an organization that provides a safe, confidential environment, youth development programs, and support services that foster personal strength and wellness among self-identified LGBT young people and questioning youth. The company supports IYG’s Gay-Straight Alliance program offered in local high schools.

Health Partnerships

Asian Cancer Research Group: Lilly, Merck and Pfizer Inc. have formed this independent not-for-profit company to accelerate research into the unmet medical needs of patients in Asia battling lung and gastric cancer. Over the next two years, the companies have committed to create an extensive pharmacogenomic cancer database of approximately 2,000 tissue samples from these patients. The database will be made publicly available to the research community and further populated with clinical data. Ultimately, the ACRG will aid researchers around the world to develop diagnostics, tailor current treatments and develop novel therapies to improve outcomes for patients with lung, gastric and perhaps other forms of cancer.

Empower Diabetes Disaster Plan: Following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Lilly partnered with the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) to develop the Empower Diabetes Disaster Plan. In the event of an emergency that forces you to evacuate your home, prepare a portable diabetes disaster kit that is both insulated and waterproof containing important items such as a list of medications and the contact names and numbers of your physicians. National Council of La Raza (NCLR): Lilly supports the NCLR and is a major sponsor of the organization’s related annual health summit. In addition, the Lilly Foundation has provided funding for a “Promotores de Salud” (lay health workers) program—“De Blanco y Negro a Colores: Entendiendo la Depresión” (“From Black and White to Color: Understanding Depression”). The outreach promotes mental health awareness in Latino communities and is focused on public awareness and support for depression, including advocating for treatment through linguistically appropriate and culturally relevant messages.

National Medical Association: Lilly has had a long-standing partnership with the National Medical Association, to improve health and reduce health disparities in minority communities. In 2013, Lilly was a major supporter of the NMA’s Summit on African American Health, a collaborative effort of many organizations that came together to develop an Action Plan to reduce health disparities. The resulting report – The State of African American Health: An Action Plan, Volume 1 – compiles strategies and solutions for those working to improve health.

National Urban League:Lilly has partnered with the National Urban League (NUL) since 1957 to launch education initiatives designed to address health disparities and chronic disease prevention. In 2006, The Lilly Foundation and NUL began a multiyear “Health and Wellness” education initiative which offered local engagement of targeted Urban League affiliates to deliver health education to urban communities.
