Why Does Lilly Support SDD?

Business Imperative

The objectives of SDD are to develop local diverse suppliers which promote the vitality of the communities where we work. Stronger, more diverse communities help us attract and retain diverse talent. Plus, diverse suppliers often offer capabilities not available in larger businesses. Community minority group members benefit as Lilly actively supports diversity priorities. The relationships we create help us achieve our corporate goals.

As a supplier to the U.S. Federal Government, Lilly is required to achieve spending goals with several different categories of diverse suppliers.

Executive Sponsorship

Through this program, diverse business owners are afforded the opportunity to build a relationship with a key Lilly executive who serves as their mentor or coach. Business owners are selected based on candid reviews of the business as well as past performance within Lilly and with other companies.

Mentor Protégé

It is becoming increasingly difficult for diverse small businesses to contract with Corporate America. To address this, we created a Mentor / Protégé program. Through the program we develop opportunities for some of our emerging diverse-owned businesses to work closely with larger suppliers of Lilly.

HUsB Coordinators

The Historically Underutilized small Business Coordinators or the HUsB creates a single forum to bring together the number of places that diverse small business can go to network.

SDD Pharmaceutical Forum

The Supplier Diversity Pharmaceutical Forum is a collaborative group of supplier diversity professionals from 15 of the larger pharmaceutical companies that dedicate resources to create greater opportunity for diverse businesses to serve the pharmaceutical industry. Lilly was instrumental in establishing the forum in the late 1990s. The forum creates a network for its members to openly share diverse supplier information, benchmark for best practices and work cooperatively on joint events to benefit the diverse vendors serving the pharmaceutical industry.

Business Education

Lilly encourages the growth and development of diverse businesses through sponsorship in business executive education programs and mentoring. Each year Lilly selects diverse business owners to attend executive training programs.
