As a biopharmaceutical company, education is vitally important to our future. Today’s student could be tomorrow’s scientist, engineer, doctor or manufacturing specialist. We are passionate advocates for education, particularly the STEM areas—science, technology, engineering and math.
The Lilly Foundation supports results-oriented programs and organizations that strengthen public education. Our geographic focus is Indiana—the site of our corporate headquarters and largest R&D footprint. We have two primary areas of focus:
- Improve student performance in science. Our primary commitment is in support of the Indiana Science Initiative (ISI). The ISI is implementing an inquiry-based, hands-on curriculum in K-12 classrooms. This initiative, which includes professional development for teachers, is designed to excite children about the wonders of science and foster innovative, creative thinking.
- Improve educational outcomes for underserved students. The foundation supports initiatives that have the potential to dramatically improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged students in Indianapolis. Our philanthropic support is primarily directed to The Mind Trust and its affiliate organizations. Our work is designed to help Indianapolis build a critical mass of talented people working in education and to create conditions where they can find innovative, effective new approaches and drive change. Most recently, Lilly has spearheaded the business community’s commitment to supporting early-childhood education for underserved children in Central Indiana.
Indianapolis employees also work to improve education by volunteering as “science coaches” and through United Way’s ReadUP program. Globally, our affiliates and employees engage with schools, young students and emerging scientists in numerous ways, all with the goal of strengthening our communities and our future pipeline of talent.
