Understanding arthritis

Arthritis can happen to anyone, and there are many reasons why. Some people are more likely
to get it because of their age, family history, or health. Others may be at risk because of things
they do or have experienced.
Older adults have a higher chance of getting arthritis because their muscles get weaker and
their bodies may have more swelling. If someone in your family has arthritis, you might
get it too. Smoking can raise your chances of getting rheumatoid arthritis. Skin problems like
psoriasis can sometimes lead to arthritis. Two common types of arthritis are rheumatoid
arthritis and psoriatic arthritis:

Psoriatic arthritis

  • Psoriatic arthritis is more common in people who have a skin condition called psoriasis.
  • It can run in the family, so you might get it if someone in your family has it.
  • It causes sore, swollen joints, which can make it hard to move.
  • Things like infections or stress can sometimes trigger it.
  • Your doctor may send you to a specialist to help find out if you have it.

Diagnosing arthritis starts with a visit to the doctor

Arthritis can feel different for everyone, but it usually starts with sore and stiff joints.

MANAGING ARTHRITIS

Living well with arthritis

Managing arthritis early can help stop it from getting worse, ease pain, and improve your overall health.
Even though there’s no cure, arthritis can still be treated and managed in different ways. Talk to your doctor about your diagnosis and the treatment options that may work best for you.

Depending on what your doctor finds, you may be referred to a rheumatologist, a specialist who treats arthritis and other joint problems.
