Patient Satisfaction: What Psoriasis Patients Value

As a nurse practitioner, I work closely with patients to determine what treatments will work best for a wide range of skin-related diseases. I often see patients living with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, a chronic immune disease that impacts approximately 125 million people worldwide.
It’s important for people living with this disease to have transparent conversations with their health care providers about finding the best treatment that will satisfy their expectations and goals.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has released guidelines that emphasize the importance of considering patient treatment preferences when making decisions, and recent updates highlight that this type of shared decision-making is associated with patient treatment satisfaction and adherence.
To evaluate the burden of disease and treatment expectations for new therapies, we recently conducted a survey that included adult patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who were unsatisfied with their current treatment.
The survey found that 90% of people placed a high value on treatment outcomes, such as clear skin, rapid treatment response, sustained response, symptom relief and results in troublesome areas.
While patients and health care providers sometimes have different expectations when it comes to treatment, it is our responsibility both to learn about what patients value most in treatment and to help educate patients about how different treatments can help them meet their goals.
These survey findings underscore how important it is for health care providers to have this open dialogue with their patients about treatment preferences and expectations. If we can align with our patients from the beginning on their treatment goals, they will have a better chance of finding a treatment regimen that works well for them.
