‘It’s a very individual disease’, Alzheimer’s activist urges policymakers to boost understanding

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) can be devastating, both for the individual and their family. While AD impacts each person differently, one thing that all patients can benefit from is having more time to understand what changes lie ahead, and plan for their future. At Lilly, we recognize that access to early and accurate diagnosis is essential to connecting patients and their families to the care and support they need.

Greater understanding of the underlying mechanisms of AD, combined with new diagnostic innovations, means we are now able to identify AD much earlier in the disease continuum. Unfortunately, access to these diagnostic breakthroughs varies significantly across Europe. In this article, the third from an independent series supported by Lilly, AD activist Jan Runar Eliassen talks about his own diagnostic journey – as well as issuing a rallying cry to policymakers to better recognize the highly individualized needs of people with AD and consider the importance of early diagnosis in their decision making.
